I love this bike! In the space of twelve months, I’ve put 12,000 kms on the clock, and 13 track days. That’s not bad going…

In that time, it’s proven to be very fast, very predictable, and very reliable.

At this next service, I am getting the valves timed, which will add a little more horsepower. I *think* I’ll add the race air-tubes in the next three months, along with a performance air-filter. Probably, at the same time, I’ll add a PCIII, and get it dyno-tuned.

In the meantime, I’ll continue to ride the crap out of it! And will undoubtedly be grinning from ear to ear.

You can call it the million-dollar Masters.
With the way the purse had jumped in the previous two Masters, it didn't come as a shock when the Augusta National Golf Club announced Saturday afternoon that today's winner will, for the first time, earn a million dollars.
The champion will pocket $1,008,000, or $180,000 more than Vijay Singh won in 2000.
The total purse is also a tournament record $5.6 million, or $1,072,172 more than 2000.
Only The Players Championship, which pays its winner $1,080,000 out of a $6 million purse, ranks higher in purse size on the PGA Tour.
Third in line are the four World Golf Championships, which have $5 million purses and pay their winners $1 million each.
The winner's share of the Masters purse has gone from $576,000 in 1998 to $720,000 in 1999 to $828,000 in 2000 to $1,008,000 this year.
Ten years ago, Ian Woosnam won $243,000 for his victory, and the total purse was $1,347,696.
Landmark years for the Masters purse came in 1984, when the winner's check went over $100,000, and 1989, when it went over $200,000. In 1994, it went over 300,000; 1996 saw it pass $400,000; and in 1998 it went over $500,000. In 1999 it jumped from $576,000 to $720,000.
The first year the total purse exceeded $1 million was 1988. It passed $2 million in 1995, $3 million in 1998, $4 million in 1999 and now $5 million.
The Augusta National doesn't comment on its purse size, but many say the purse plays a significant role in how a tournament is ranked in importance.
Currently, the Masters ranks ahead of the other three major championships, but that is subject to change. The Masters is the first major of the year, and the other three have not announced their purses.
Of the other majors, in 2000 the PGA Championship had a bigger purse than the 2000 Masters, at $5 million, with $900,000 going to the winner. The U.S. Open paid its winner $800,000 out of a $4.5 million purse, and the British Open paid $759,000 out of a $4.1 million purse.
The current Augusta National purse is light years beyond the $5,000 it paid in its inaugural year, 1934. The winner, Horton Smith, pocketed $1,500. The balance of the purse was divided among the top 11 pros.
If not for monetary gifts from members such as Bartlett Arkell, who came up with the $1,500 first-place money, the club couldn't have paid the professionals in the field of the first tournament.
In his 1976 book, The Story of the Augusta National, the club's co-founder and president, Clifford Roberts, wrote of the first Masters:
``I must confess that the financial results were a bit disastrous. The start-up cost exceeded the amounts raised to cover such outlays. Our ideas of how a golf tournament should be conducted required expenditures that results in a deficit even before provisions for the prize fund.''
According to Roberts' book, the club lost money on all nine of the pre-World War II tournaments.
Even when the Masters started picking up steam, the prize money was never that high.
``I remember when the purse wasn't over $12,000 and they didn't want it to go up,'' said Augusta's Bill Whaley, a Masters badge-holder since the 1940s. ``They wanted the recognition of winning the Masters Tournament to be the aim for all the golfers and not the money. They tried to keep money out of it for a long time. I think money finally won.''
Jim Furyk, who has fired rounds of 69-71-70 this week, downplayed the importance golfers put on the purse in a tournament such as the Masters.
``As far as major championships are concerned, it doesn't matter if you're playing for $5 or a million dollars,'' Furyk said. ``Everyone is going to want to win the Masters.
``Maybe I'd be putting words in someone else's mouth, but they may think it makes it a more elite tournament to have a bigger purse and for their winner to make comparable money that they would in another major championship.''
No matter what the Masters pays its winner, the money the champ will make on endorsements and overseas appearance fees will greatly exceed his winner's check.
``He's going to be a heckuva lot more money just off the fact he won the Masters,'' Furyk said.
Furyk said a price tag can't be put on what winning the Masters does to a player's stature in the game.
``I think when you're old and you sit around and think about what you've done in your life, having a Masters trophy and a green jacket, the memory of doing that is going to outweigh any financial gain. It's a prestigious thing to do. It's something you dream of as a kid. That outweighs everything else.''

The Obama Administration has announced the Car Czar is out and an automobile task force is in. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and National Economic Council Director Lawrence Summers will oversee a new panel charged with overseeing the government bailout of GM and Chrysler.

This move comes a day before the two car companies are scheduled to submit restructuring plans to the government. Presumably, this task force will be involved in approving the plans and monitoring the companies’ progress.

Whether the task force is a better idea than a car czar all depends on how Geithner and Summers prioritize their new responsibility. With the hundreds of billions in government money spiraling through the economy, the money wrapped up in the auto bailout may not get the administration’s full attention. Then again, a single czar is easy to marginalize and, if Obama couldn’t find the right person for the job, a multi-official task force seems the better option.

The failure of GM and Chrysler would significantly add to the nation’s growing unemployment rate. For this reason alone, I suspect the new task force to take their responsibility seriously and do what they can to make sure the billions in bailout money is not squandered. The question is: can such squandering be avoided, no matter the diligence of government overseers? Even with the massive loans, there is no guarantee GM and Chrysler can survive. Time will tell if we’ve used taxpayer wisely or if we’ve thrown good money after bad.

HTC announced the Touch Diamond2 and Touch Pro2 handsets at the Mobile World Congress today.

The Touch Diamond2, aimed at the mainstream consumer, upgrades the display size from its Touch Diamond predecessor from 2.8-inches to 3.2-inches widescreen VGA. The handset remains a thin 13.7 mm thick, and runs on a customized version of Windows Mobile 6.1 that integrates with HTC’s TouchFLO 3D technology that includes a touch sensitive zoom bar for zooming and panning web pages, emails, text messages and more. Other features include a 5.0 megapixel camera with auto focus, expandable memory, a gravity sensor, and an ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts screen brightness. The Touch Diamond2 also includes HTC’s new Push Internet that updates web apps in the background so, for example, if you want to check news updates it’s ready to go upon launching the app so you don’t have to wait for download.

The HTC TouchPro2 is aimed at the business crowd, incorporating Windows Mobile 6.1, TouchFLO 3D, Push Internet, a high-res, 3.6-inch widescreen touch VGA display and a full QWERTY keyboard. The Touch Pro2 also has a zoom bar and gravity, proximity and ambient light sensors. The handset also has HTC’s new Straight Talk, that allows the Touch Pro2 to be used for single or multi-person conference calls. When it’s flipped on its back it turns into a speakerphone system.
The HTC Touch Diamond2 will arrive in Europe and Asia early in the second quarter, and other global markets later in 2009. The Touch Pro2 will be available globally in early summer.

Roland Burris

On February 5 Roland Burris quietly filed an affidavit to correct the testimony he had provided to the Illinois House impeachment panel on January 8. Rep. James Durkin closely questioned Burris regarding his awareness of a quid pro quo for his Senate seat. His answer was that he was not. Burris's affidavit reveals that he was solicited for campaign cash (up to $10,000, according to the Sun-Times) by Governor Blagojevich's brother Robert in connection with Burris's interest in the seat.

What prompted Burris's correction of his testimony? The Sun-Times notes that one of Burris's three conversations with the governor's brother was likely recorded by the FBI. In an interesting story on Burris's affidavit, the AP reports that Robert Blagojevich's attorney states his client believes one of the conversations was recorded by the FBI. Surely the thought must also have occurred to Burris.

The last exchange between Durkin and Burris that is reflected in the transcript posted by the Sun-Times addresses what Burris would have done if he had been aware of a quid pro quo:

REPRESENTATIVE DURKIN: Okay. If you were aware of a quid pro quo, what would you have done? [Discussion about the relevance of the question follows.]

MR. BURRIS: Representative Durkin, knowing my ethics, I would not participate in anybody's quid pro quo. I've been in government for 20 years and never participated in anybody's quid pro quo.

REPRESENTATIVE DURKIN: I guess the point is would you have gone to the federal authorities if you were aware of that?

MR. BURRIS: I have no response to that.

Did Senator Burris ever "go to federal authorities" after he was asked for campaign cash by the governor's brother? Senator Burris appears to have done absolutely nothing after he was solicited for the campaign cash except cross his fingers and hope it wouldn't hurt the possibility of his appointment by the governor. If the true answer to Rep. Durkin's question is "no," as it seems to be, the true answer must go a long way to explaining Senator Burris's original responses to Rep. Durkin's questions before the impeachment committee.

UPDATE: RealClearPolitics includes Mark Brown's "Perjury or not, Burris at least shows that he's a liar" in its lineup this morning. Brown writes that "our new U.S. senator proved himself to be a lying little sneak."

There’s lots of questions about the collision of two nuclear subs in the Atlantic. The British and French subs were on separate patrols when they hit each other.

A few points so far:

It appears that neither sub had much advance warning of the crash. Wouldn’t sonar have picked up an approaching submarine long before it got close enough for any collision?

From Reuters:

The nuclear-powered submarines collided earlier this month but there was no damage to the vessels' weapons, said First Sea Lord Admiral Jonathon Band, head of the Royal Navy.

British and French officials have so far failed to explain how two sophisticated vessels from allied nations could collide in open water, a highly unusual event that is deeply embarrassing for both navies.

"The submarines came into contact at very low speeds, both submarines remain safe and no injuries occurred, " he told a news conference.

"There was no compromise to nuclear safety."

Both submarines were badly damaged in the incident and had to return to port, according to British newspaper reports. Band and the defence ministries in London and Paris would not comment on those reports.

The French defence ministry said: "They briefly entered contact at very low speed while submerged. There were no injuries. Neither their deterrence capability nor nuclear safety were affected."

It said the French vessel suffered damage to its sonar dome, which houses navigation and detection equipment but was able to return to base at L'Ile Longue in Brittany under its own power.

“HMS Vanguard and Le Triomphant, which were carrying nuclear missiles, are believed to have collided while submerged on 3 or 4 February, according to reports. The submarines had a total of around 250 sailors on board

Defence officials told guardian.co.uk that the two submarines collided in what they said was an extraordinary accident.

"They can't see each other in the water," an official said, raising questions about the submarines' sonar and why they did not detect one another.

The Ministry of Defence said the Vanguard returned to its base in Faslane, Scotland, with only "scrapes".

France's defence ministry said in a brief statement on 6 February that the Triomphant had struck "a submerged object (probably a container)" during a return jomurney from a patrol, damaging the sonar dome on the front of the submarine.windows mobile

Microsoft Corp. unveiled its Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system today on what are being called "Windows phones" that focus on touch-friendly features and quicker navigation, acknowledging the influence of the iPhone. The phones should ship as early as July.

"We're building on our expertise in the business-user segment to expand the platform ... for consumers," said Greg Sullivan, senior product manager at Microsoft in a recent interview. Microsoft executives announced the operating system at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Sullivan admitted that Windows Mobile has taken some criticism from Motorola Inc., bloggers and even the public for providing an operating system in the current Windows Mobile 6.1 and earlier versions that has been termed "kludgy" or even unsophisticated when compared with those in newer smartphones by competitors.

Nonetheless, LG Electronics today announced it is making Windows Mobile its primary smartphone platform, with 26 different mobile models using the operating system in 2012.

Sullivan demonstrated beta software of 6.5 on an HTC Touch Pro , but handheld makers were expected to show new devices that Microsoft has decided to brand as "Windows phones" and that will ship early in the second half of 2009 using the updated operating system.

Microsoft provides the operating system for several major device manufacturers and has been concerned that its role in the highly competitive smartphone market has been diluted, especially because of the success of Apple, which makes the iPhone's operating system as well as the device, and Research In Motion Ltd., which makes the operating system for its many BlackBerry models. One current Windows Mobile manufacturer, Motorola, recently said it will wait for Windows Mobile 7.0 to ship sometime in 2010 for its smartphones, skipping over the 6.5 release.

More than 20 million phones with Windows Mobile shipped last year from four major manufacturers.

Sullivan said Microsoft wants to "improve the user experience" and has designed 6.5 "on the notion that users want to get to their stuff and get it rather quickly."

For example, the 6.5 operating system allows "fat finger touching" on a resistive touch screen, rather than requiring a user to pull out a stylus to make more precise touches as in earlier versions of the operating system, Sullivan said. That innovation means a user can make touches on smaller smartphones with one hand, using the thumb for touching icons. The home screen has a honeycomb look, with the icons further apart than with other home screens for easier touches.

Another upgrade allows users at the home screen, known as the "Today" screen, to quickly get to applications with a simple drag of an icon. A user also can see a missed a phone call, e-mail or text message, and touch that message to quickly launch a return call, without the need to unlock the smartphone and load the voice calling, text or e-mail application with what could amount to several steps.

The browser in Version 6.5 provides a built-in Flash video player as well as pan and zoom capabilities with the touch of a finger. It is built on HTML rendering done by Microsoft for its desktop Internet Explorer 7 version, Sullivan said.

Microsoft's recently announced My Phone sync and backup service will also ship with the 6.5 phones. That service will give users 200MB of free storage, which is useful for users who want to store e-mail or other data for transfer to another device.

Microsoft also plans to launch an application store similar to Apple's AppStore and other online storefronts from other operating system providers. It will be called Windows Marketplace for Mobile and will allow a user to control the applications from both the phone and the Web.

Two analysts gave Microsoft credit for recognizing the need to improve the user experience with 6.5.
